What bike to get...

Hey guys,

So my roomate used to be totally against bikes, but now that mine is in the garage all the time, i am wanting to buy something for him that he can learn on. He has never driven anything with a clutch, and doesnt evem really understand the concept, so i am looking for something that he could just learn the basics of riding, and the extent he would probably ever ride would be around the neighborhood and possibly on main roads for short distances. I dont really want to spend a ton of money (Less than $1000) and would prefer something beat up or something that i wont lose a ton on if he crashed it a few times or whatever. The only real cheap bikes i know of are ninja 250's, so trying to get ideas i can look for for something cheap for him.

Any ideas are appreciated.

In that price range think more like Honda Rebel. Any sport bike in that range is poop. Charging issues out the yin yang. Then what else is wrong, more tweaking than learning.

This may sound totally corny and lame, but if you really arent sure he can get the clutch thing down, maybe find an older 80's or 90's honda matic. It would be at least something to get him comfortable with being on 2 wheels. If he gets used to that and comfortable, learning the clutch down the road would be easier since it wouldnt be "everything" at once to learn.

Haha yea, NY is a little far from me.... And most 600 anythings around here are pretty pricy. I am not buying this so he can go ride around all the time, mainly just to learn on.

Haha well he is my cousin, not just my roommate. And he takes me to all the OU home games I want to go to, plus OU Texas.... So I don't mind helping him out.

Dirtbike would definitely be best to learn on if he is really clueless when it comes to riding a bike. You could easily get a dirtbike under $1000 and when he crashes it the repairs won't be anywhere near as costly.
