TV electronics gurus

I have a sony sxrd 55" rear projection TV

got a little warning message that the projection lamp is due to be replaced ( picture seems fine, almost 4 years to the date we bought it........maybe just a fixed time warning thing?)

anyways, figure I'll get a replacement lamp to have on hand ( since it looks like the Packers will be in the Super Bowl again )

As I search online it appears there's a choice of bulb wattage one says 100-120 watt and a more expensive one says 150 watt

naturally, I'm inclined to get the highest wattage

is there any difference in picture quality with the higher wattage bulb or any other type of bulb that would be an upgrade?

Well here's how the lamps work on most rear Proj and DLP's.

They don't go slowly bad. They are good till the warning comes up and then you have limited time till it goes out. Like your reserv gas on your bike, the bike won't run any different when the gas light comes up, but that you have some time left till poof, it's dead.

As far as the wattage, I would ask Sony or a few qualified stores & online sited like B&Hphoto.com, etc. Sometimes the higher wattage can ruin what the circuit boards permit if it wasn't designed for that. 4-5 years is average for light use and 3 years for heavy use, like kids and family watching 5+ hours a day.

Here's a site you might want to join for TV folks:

14' Standard Drip (since a Venti latte went up 20 cents)

Send a message via Yahoo to TMY10ER
:iamwithst....good post AND good info right there. i'd get the bulb asap though cause like Static said, after you get the warning then it's only a matter of time before the current bulb goes out.

Take a risk, and you may lose. Never risk, and you will always lose.

Just a FYI, I had the same thing happen to me. The message came on so I bought a bulb to have on hand so once the bulb burned out I could swap it. A year and a half later Im still waiting to swap it out.

Better to have and wait then not to have and oops bulb just went out and now instead of a 5 minute wait to replace it, it's like a week or so.

Sounds like a perfect time to get rid of the projection set and get a Plasma!
