So I met the luckiest guy in the world!

I'm not usually one for telling stories from work but I thought I would share this one with you guys/gals. I'm at work last night and I'm stopped at a very busy intersection. I look down at my laptop and enter in a license plate for a lookup. While looking at the screen, I suddenly hear tires screeching and then a crashing noise. I look up and to the right, I see a dude and his bicycle flying through the air and land in the street and there was a taxi cab stopped directly in front of him. Now I yell "HOLY [email protected]!!!" and try to radio this into dispatch without screaming across the air - but I didn't try hard enough and still ended up screaming. I pull up to the scene, and run up to the rider. Now I'm expecting this to be very messy but to my surprise, he is awake, moving and NO broken bones. He asked me what happened and I tell him he just got hit by a car - he did not believe me. He does have a pretty good bump on the back of his head and his bike was destroyed. I look at the windshield of the cab - there was a perfect imprint of this guy's head cracked in to it. I just could not believe he was alive after this impact. Soon we get the rider loaded up in the ambulance and then he caught a helicopter to the closest trauma center for further treatment. Investigation revealed that the bike rider completely ran the same redlight I was stopped at. He went directly into on coming traffic and into the path of the taxi cab. He gets waffled by the cab, thrown about 15 feet and lives to tell about it. If that ain't lucky I don't what is.

That kid is one lucky bastard. Did you give him a ticket for running the light?

but I hate how we have to share the road and they can run stop signs/lights and not get tickets

Our Highway Unit is handling the investigation and yes he is getting a few tickets out of this. I'm not how PA's traffic laws work, but in NJ bicycle riders are required to follow traffic laws. This isn't the first time I have seen a bicycle rider ending up ticketed because of their actions.

here in Louisiana and in most states bicycle riders are bound by the same laws as any motorist. And I have had to cite a few for the same thing as you observed

Yeah I'm prety sure its the same way here in PA but I always see them out on back roads riding in the middle of the lane, going through stop signs, etc. It irritates me. Saw a girl in philly go through 2 red lights one with a cop at the intersection and he didn't care. Oh well if a few tickets is all this kid gets he should feel extremely lucky.

He was lucky, no doubt about it. Just wasn't his day to meet the maker.
