Pontiac Serpintine belt toast

on the way home from work yesterday I get the alternator light, and I'm like cuz I replaced it two years ago... quickly followed by the coolent high temp alarm as I watch the temp climb past 250'f and keep going.

go to pull over and I have no power steering...

this sux, so many things going tits up at once....

pop the hood that volia' the serpintine belt is wrapped around the alternator.

ok, not that big of a deal until I find out the belt goes around the engine mount. So I have to put a jack under the engine, unbolt the mount, scooch the engine down enough to slip the new belt in, scooch it back up and rebolt up the engine mount.

I have a floor jack but I feel so gheto doing all this in a parking lot. Wish I had a trailer big enough to haul that baby home.

Ah well, wish me luck, I'll be out there tomorrow morning.

it's so stupid how cars are mashed together these days, unbolt a motor mount for a serpentine belt? i'd be pissed

I know which motor you are working on. It is ridiculous the way they did that. I don't know how many of these I changed while working in the shop because people couldn't figure out that they needed to unbolt the mount.

I looked at that belt for a good half an hour back when I replaced the alternator trying to figure out how to slip off the belt and put a new one on.

Is it just the three bolts on top going through that aluminum bracket from the vibration reduction mount?

looks to me like I can support the motor, remove those three, lower the motor a scooch and slip the belt into place.

it's the 95 Pontiac Grand Am 3.2 liter V6 Transvers (SE 3200) I've even replaced the belt tentioner 4 years ago because the spring broke and was doing the mellon scratch then to trying to figure out how to put a new belt on.

I've had this belt for 5 or 6 years in the trunk trying to come to grips as to how to replace it... kinda made it'self a priorty now.

Yes you have the right idea. Worst case is you'll have to remove the mount entirely to gain enough arm room to finagle the new belt into place.

It has definitely made itself a priority! But I promise you once you get the mount unbolted and some wiggle room, this will seem a lot easier than it looks. It may take a little time, but when I was doing these fairly often I could get them changed out in 20 to 30 minutes. (of course I had the use of air tools at my side as well)

When you support the motor from underneath try to use a board or soft rubber on the head of your jack to keep from damaging anything.

I had mine done yesterday - that, the battery and oil - mother [email protected] - ~400 - stupid BMW's - this has been a hot summer and is wrecking cars.

Rgr that, thanks for the info, looks pretty straight forward once the engine is supported, all the bolts stick up on the bracket and mount, I should be able to get right at it.

and I've replaced the tentioner, alternator, and water pump impeller seal (which was suprisingly a wicked good design) so I've got some experiance in that area, just couldn't figure out how to get that belt off with out cutting or unbolting the engine mount...

... now I have the answer.

My old boss got a beamer for his wife, he said he couldn't take that thing into the shop for less then 400 bux, regardless what the problem was.

True but the best car ever.

It is an 04 3 Series that I bought new. 115000 miles later:
Front brakes - pads once, pads and rotors once
Rear pads and rotors once
Going on my 5 set of tires :)
Battery
Serpentine Belt

Still have the OEM wipers

And oil changed ever 10-12000 miles

No complaints here

Yeah you should have no problems getting this done and you'll be back on the road before you know it.

You know I am actually shocked at what a good design that water pump seal is also! Its very easy to access and takes no time to replace. (finally something they took some time to design well)
