You need to do something that speaks to your heart, something that calls to you and you enjoy and are good at.
I went down the "it's a good job and it pays well road", mind you, not unhappy, but it's difficult to get excited and jump into something that doesn't call to you, day after day after day. I found something in the field that I really enjoy but it could be much worse. especially if you spend $25 grand to get an education to do something you don't enjoy.
If I could afford it, i'd be a race crew / engineer for a motorcycle race team... second that, I'd work in a custom fab shop for 1 off motorcycle stuff (aka Orange county choppers with out the silly azz drama)...
as it is, i'm making the atoms split, cleaning up the radioactive waste and the like. I'm good at it, but not my dream job.
you can change your major in your second year, pretty much with out a huge problem. That is a dead line... if you find out you aren't happy with what you are studying, start looking around the campus, talk to your guidance people... make your decission by then and you can still grad in 4 years... if you wait too long you will be 5 years or you will have to put in some summer classes (or both)
