Bikers mowed down with 'stolen' Hummer..

This happened last weekend in South Africa..hopefully they lock this kid up for a long time..

2010-10-17 23:02

Virginia Keppler, Beeld

Pretoria - Two motorcyclists died on Saturday morning and a third was badly injured when an 18-year-old youth from Pretoria North crashed into them as they were on their way to a prayer meeting.

He'd apparently taken his mother's pricey Hummer and later crashed into the motorcyclists in Rachel de Beer Street, Pretoria North.

The young man fled the scene shortly before the Hummer started burning.

JP Kruger, 32, and Pieter Coetzee died at the scene, while Coetzee's son Pieter jnr, 25, is in a serious condition in the Montana hospital in Pretoria. The three belong to the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA).

At 05:35 they were on their way to Groenkloof in Pretoria, where they gather with other motorcyclists to pray every Saturday morning at 06:00.

According to police spokesperson Matthews Nkoadi, the motorcyclists were riding in an easterly direction in Rachel de Beer Street and the Hummer was traveling westward. However, the Hummer was in the wrong lane, facing oncoming traffic.

"The driver struck all three motorcyclists. He jumped out of the car after the accident and fled the scene. The Hummer started burning, and all that remained was the burnt-out wreck," Nkoadi said.

100 motorcyclists hold vigil

Louis von Allermans, president of the CMA's Hatfield branch in Pretoria, said over 100 motorcyclists gathered at the Montana hospital on Sunday morning to pray for Coetzee jnr.

"It's very painful. Pieter jnr lost his right leg above the knee.

"He also fractured his shoulder, cheekbones and forehead and sustained other injuries.

"On Sunday morning he still had internal bleeding, but this stopped later. Luckily his lungs and heart are still working very well," Von Allermans said.

Dirk Muller, president of the CMA's Akasia branch in Pretoria, who was riding two blocks behind the three motorcyclists, said it was a tragic scene.

"The parents of the boy (in the Hummer) were also at the scene later, and it's terrible for them too. I'm sick and tired of the lawlessness of some drivers in South Africa.

"This hurts us very much, because we're busy doing the Lord's work and then something like this happens.

Bitter taste

"It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, because we're trying so hard to make a difference," Muller said.

Muller himself was involved in an accident four months ago, when a woman who was speaking on her cellphone ignored a stop sign and crashed into him.

"I lost ligaments in my shoulder and now I can barely pick up my grandchildren. I don't know whether some drivers simply don't look, or whether they simply don't have any respect for motorcyclists."

According to Nkoadi the police were still looking for the 18-year-old on Sunday.

"The mother said she doesn't know where he is and that he hasn't come home yet."

The police have not yet been able to confirm whether the boy has a driver's license.

The Hummer burst into flames after hitting three motorcyclists.

Nope..in SA it works a wee bit different.. you only get "classified" as an adult when you turn 21. Same with the drivers license..at 17 you can get your learners..and only when you turn 18 for your license..and at 18 you can buy booze legally as well..
