anyone ever journey through sicily? *my job opportunity

im looking at taking a new job over there at the siganella naval station. its not my typical aircraft maintenance something totally different. i cant get into detail about my position, or else id have to kill or brutally maim you (literally top secret). however, i may turn it down considering id be trapped on an island for 3 years. yea, there is traveling through europe which is great but my residential location is what concerns me. i could take this job in three other locations across the country but the locations dont interest me. regardless, a top secret clearance is money if i were to separate after my 3 year tour is up and take it into the real world. it is said a TS clearance (which cost almost $100,000 to investigate) can land you an easy $80,000+ job to start off. such as guarding a warehouse haha. if youre wondering why not take it, i enjoy my current job and feel secure knowing what i know about it and wouldnt mind making a 20+ yr military career out of it. yes, i can always go back to it after my tour is up or even extend if i like my new job...the options... how is sicily?

Sicily is one of my favorite places in the world and I have traveled quite a bit. I went to Sicily on 12 two week detachments and one 30 day detachment while a Navy reservist. I also went there on vacation with my wife in July 06 and got to see the World Cup championship game at a Piazza in Taormina; possibly one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. It's a great island to be on, lots to see and the beach in Taormina is great in the summer. It's also close to a lot of good places. Getting on the mainland is easy and you have many great european countries nearby. I would love to live there and would live there for a couple of years in a heartbeat if the opportunity ever presented itself. Great food, beautiful women, beautiful sites, and close to a lot of good things.

thats great to hear! how "easy" is it to get to the mainland??? i mean if im going to bring my bike over there id love to ferry that and or my car to italia for some road trips instead of relying on other modes of travel.
but all together this sounds great. my grandmother was the last of my direct line of family to journey back to naples it would be awesome to see the home land.
...anyone else?

Cannot speak for the location, but I would be surprised if your current position didn't already provide a DoD Secret. If I remember correctly, Secret clearances came-in at the E5 and O1 level in the Army. So, unless the new position comes with TS+ (SCI, poly, lifestyle, etc., etc), it's just a good thing and not an amazing thing. Moving from DoD Secret to basic TS is not a huge feat to do on the outside (most agencies will grant interim TS, if you've already got the Secret).

Still, it's a great thing to start thinking/planning for the future while you are still in the service. I joined after high school and saw so many folks create tons of debt for themselves... which dictated their future and from time to time excluded them from the higher level security clearances.

I am encouraged to hear you enjoy the military. I don't know what my problem was, but I really didn't like the Army all that much -- both the enlisted tour and in while in college ROTC. I loved the chance to serve my country, but just couldn't get into the day to day.

All the best!

thanks dude. im in the air force, couldnt have it any other way...but thats my .02. i do have a secret clearance. as for my details provided behind Ts thats just what ive heard. but like you said, im just thinking for the future. its the thought of a dramatic change thats exciting and intimidating. i havent experienced this since i joined but in the same note this is why i joined. honestly, it wasnt "what i can do for my country" it was "what my country could do for me".
