Zip ties insert - 1/5 throttle mod

Had rifleman inserts on my 2nd gen but wanted to try the zip tie throttle mod on the 3rd gen since it is FREE. This was easier as I didn't have to grind the housing or adjust the cables or anything. Just formed two zip ties that I super glued together by using mild heat from a lighter. Got it to form and put the housing back together. Same results and took me 10 mins. No other modification required.

The housing apart

Both zip ties super glued together and starting to form

Both zip ties around the throttle action

Everything put back together. Make sure you line the stud with the hole on the clip on.

Tip: I gave it a little glue on zip tie when I placed it on the throttle action to keep it from moving around when I reassembled it.

Tried this again on my '04 tonight, and made it happen. I used a file to notch the zip-ties so the cables stay centered, and to taper the ends.

Rep sent.

(On a side note, I used an empty roll of electrical tape to form my zip-ties around... It was the perfect diameter. I didn't like the idea of wet superglue AND a lighter near my throttle.)

Is the 2 zipties the same thickness as riflemans insert though?

It's gotta to be pretty damn close because I can't tell the difference.

Never seen the Rifleman but I would have to guess no. From reading the how to for the riflemans and the zip tie, it seems the zip tie handles the stock slack that is there where as the riflemans seems to me to be much more in depth. The riflemans looked to add more thickness enough so where the throttle cables needed adjusted. I was looking to get rid of the slack and thats what the zip tie did. Back to the original question hell if I know.

ok, hope I can help.

Yes, this mod mod works, YOU MUST GLUE THE ZIP TIE TO THE GRIP. It can and will come loose and if it finds its way out from under the cables it will jam up the grip and can cause the throttle to stick open...

If you have done this mod and haven't glued it, please do so immediatly.

My insert uses spring tention to hold it in place.

My insert is 3/16th thick, this adds a full 3/8ths to the diameter of your grip. It will take the 92' OEM rotation down to 72' Degrees. The zip tie method takes it down to about 80 to 82. If you get the really heavy duty zips ties you will be alot more near the 72'

my insert is also tapered on both tips, this does two things, it usually works with in the cable slack that the adjustors allow and it makes the throttle response slightly less agressive at the very bottom and very top of the throw.

I'm more then happy to help if you want to give this a go on your own, I recomend 1-1/4 PVC pipe instead of a zip ties.

Please remember, this is your throttle, please treat it with respect.

Need to know how to install your Rifleman's 1/5th throttle insert? click me
For more info on a sticky grip (not enough cable slack) click me
