Hey all, ive had an 05 gen 1 track bike for a few months but only just got out to ride it. Ran great and didnt seem to be short of power. However...i did notice that the temperature was running up to 110c whilst out on track. I saw 114 after stopping and once it was flashing up 'Hi'. The cooling system is all working fine and had a real good flush through, thermostat is working perfect. Does anyone have any ideas other than headgasket? Dont want to end up doing the headgasket and finding its something else. Thanks ?
Running lean possibly. Power Commander installed? Check the spark plugs. See what they look like. That should give you the info you need. As long as the water pump is good and there is no cooling system blockages. Try running a Water Wetter (or similar ) product to help cooling efficiency.
Yeah it does have a power commander. Havent had the plugs out yet because ive read its a bitch to do. Thats gonna have to be the next step. I did notice the exhaust headers are getting very hot very fast, but the end can doesnt get that hot. Even after riding you can hold your hand on it.
No i dont have anything to check the AFR. The engine is already half out now so i'm gonna do the headgasket anyway. Then ill get the fueling sorted. That should eliminate pretty much everything...fingers crossed ?
Before you start ripping this apart, Have you checked the fan is working correctly, how hard are the hoses when the engine is running cold and hot, with the engine running do you see bubbles in the expansion tank particularly when you blip the throttle. Have you checked inside the water pump, finally you could gas test the coolant.
If it is flashing hi shut her down. I ended up with a blown head gasket after that shit happened to me on my gen 1. Fyi I still have a spare headgasket and clutch cable for my now non existent gen 1. pretty sure it's a thin headgasket from cometic. Not the thinnest but one step above if my memory is right. Anyhow, it is great so long as you haven't decked your heads, if you have then get a standard thickness gasket. If your res has bubbles in it while the bike is running your gasket is blown, really simple diagnosis. the only other sign of such would be mad white smoke out the exhaust. short of one of those two things if you drain the oil and water comes out you can bet your gasket is fine. You probably have sediment in the coolant system. That or mad corrosion in the radiator. A new radiator is much cheaper than a blown engin
Not that hot, like above guy said, but make sure you hear the fan running at idle when hot; which is about 203f for g4.
water wetter works with just water; most tracks don't allow coolant but check if wetter is ok as rules change as track problems crop up.
