Heli-coil doesn't do shit if the pan is cracked...
Yes, to clarify, the shop would be a pretty bad one if they went ahead with a heli-coil if the pan is cracked. Moreover, the OP wouldn't bother taking it to a shop after finding a crack in the pan after removal. I'm sure we'd all agree that the most likely cause of the leak is partly stripped threading.
Apologies to the OP for my abbreviated reply but it demonstrates my ignorance since the cracked pans I've seen were from lowered cars bottoming out. I can't recall seeing a cracked pan from over tightening and stripped threads were the result. I worked for a drive through oil change place in Uni so I saw more than a few leaking drain plugs during that time.
