I heard the same thing as you. Just to try it out the last 2 tanks of gas on my bike have been 89. I don't push the bike hard, 90% of my riding is done under 7k rpm. I took the bike out to some back roads with friends over the weekend and I couldn't feel any difference in the bike from 91 to 89. I had my bike tuned on 91 it doesn't have much work just a slip on K&N and PC3.

With a stock motor Using 87 is completely fine, it actually makes more power, They say to use higher octane to fight detonation, but with a stock motor it would take some seriously extreme conditions to detonate. I've ran 87 in my bike for years without a single problem. 87 octane burns hotter, therefore makes more power..

Seeing your post in another thread got me wanting to try a lower octane. I'm so paranoid about octane thanks to my RX-7 days where you get some knock (pre detonation) and your motor is gone.

I've only ever heard mine ping if I bogged it off a start, and then only for a moment.

The factory specs are for worst case conditions: High ambient temperature, hot coolant temperature (120 C), low altitude, engine being lugged down under load, plus a margin of safety.

Um.. How much would you really be saving on a 4.5 gallon tank?
If you usually fill up about 3-4 gallons and 87 being $0.2 cheaper than 91, that's like around $.5 and filling up twice a week you'd save like $4-5 per month. You'd barely save enough each month to buy a Venti Mocha Latte for $4.35
