upgrading brakes and lever compatibility
hi. i have a gen 1. and looking at MC from a 2007 or 2008 zx6r. will my levers fit the new MC or will i need to buy a brake lever for a zx6?
if im going to do that i think id stick on a pair of shorties. in which case, would i need to buy a pair from each model bike, 1 for my stock clutch, and one for the new brake?

If your going to do it why not do it properly and buy a MC from say Brembo or similar?
You'd only be going from a 14mm master to a 16mm master on the ZX6R so why not do it properly and get a 19x18mm?
Before you do that though have you done pads, lines and flushed and bled fluid already?

SBK, its most likely because of the cost difference. I dont see Brembo stuff for cheap, so thats why I did the M/C from an 08 6R. Also, I only street ride and hit the drap strip so I didnt need a track setup, just something that makes my brakes actually exist.
You need the lever for an 07/08 6R to match the M/C, the factory Gen 1 lever will not work with it. I dont know about the clutch lever though. To be on the safe side, youd be better off getting a clutch lever for a Gen1 and a brake lever for the 07/08 M/C.

What did your ZX6R master cost, used I assume?
Still interested to see if Rapid Van has done anything else or if he's just jumping into a master change.
Doing those smaller mods I mentioned first can also be an even more cost effective way to go about things.

just cause its for track doesn't mean it isn't useful for the street. Going with a cast brembo mc isn't that expensive and you might even be able to get one used. Don't forget if you get a quality MC you can carry it over to any bike you'd like pretty much. Don't just at the cost. It wouldn't be that much more anyway. I think new a cast brembo MC is under $300 like 280ish.

$260 for a forged radial 19x18 from Hardracing below and I spent like 2 minutes looking so they will be out there cheaper than that.

I got an mc from an 08 10r for $70.00 shipped. I have no doubt that the Brembo would be hands down better but for $190 more some guys just cant see that. The 08 radial along with s.s. lines, Carbonne Loraine pads and Nissen calipers are pretty darn good and WAY better than the stock 1st gen stuff. As for the Ops question if you can find a third gen mc and buy levers for it then the clutch side will fit your first gen.

the thing thats the killer is postage to us down here in new zealand. often the shipping is more than the cost of the item. i can get a used MC for around $100 us. and it will cost more than that again just in shipping.
yes i have braided lines, flushed out the fluid and have EBC sintered pads. the brakes fade after 2 or 3 hard corners on track.
i rarely ride on the road, and even when i do, i never have the need to use brakes except in towns. i tend to ride with the purpose of getting out of the towns if i ride on the road at all
so yes, the next step is a MC upgrade., then calipers.

You will need a new brake lever. A non radial m/c lever will not work with a radial m/c. I just went through this with my bike. Check ebay for leverage. I got my set from Bohemian racing. 60 for both clutch and brake.
