See, I was not aware of that. You can't win with these 04's. Fkn generator gears are $400+

Yes, the generator gear letter has to match the clutch basket letter. I just had an idea though, members could do a parts swap. I'm assuming the gear is still useable off a failed generator right? If any of us are lucky enough, we could end up trading gears...

I have 3 generators off the bat.

The failures are really strange. Several with early VIN# 2004 models have failed in under 5,000 miles. Then you have GoFaster's bike, an early 2004 build, with over 42,000 miles.

If I remember right, Older Guy's original 2004 ZX10R had way more on it than mine when he sold it, and it never had this problem. I know of a couple other 2004's locally with more on them than mine, and they've not had problems, either.

Yea I was curious about his, wasn't sure if it was high or low vin 04.

I drove more, worried less, and now I'm paying for it. If any 04 riders spot an 05 generator for sale, I would not hesitate to buy it. I'm getting my motor rebuilt right now and all I have is an 04 generator to put in. Not sure I want to risk it again. I'm going to start calling around shops/salvage to see if they have any 05 motor part outs. My alternative is to order OEM and convert my 04 generator to an 05 and use as many parts off the 04 as possible

Yea an 05 motor swap would get the job done too. Unless you open it up and rebuild it, you don't know what you're getting when you buy a used motor though...

In my case, I bought an 04 motor for $500 that had generator failure. My friend is going to rebuild it for me, and a lot of the other stuff I am doing myself. So right there I'm saving on labor. Gaskets are gonna set me back $100 maybe, plus whatever internals I may have to replace, plus whatever I spend on getting my hands on a generator. A few weeks ago I was just going to buy an 05 motor w/o tb's for $1400, then my friend offered to do the rebuild and re-assembly for me

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, and please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that you can convert your 04 generator to an 05. From what I saw in the microfiche, the coupling assembly+snap ring and washer is the only difference when comparing the 04 to 05 parts diagram. You may have to order a different sized shim as well. So, assuming you have a good 04 generator already, the conversion would set you back a few hundred more than what you would be spending on a used 05 generator....if you can find one
