I ordered the KN-303. I'm curious where this info about pressures and not using the 11-15 filter came from?

Because wheelie!!!

K&N switched their manufacturing recently and the quality control doesn't seem to be up to par. The two attached pictures are from the filter I pulled off my race bike last night. It had 2 trackdays and 1 race weekend on it. take a good look at the o-ring and you can see a split starting in one small spot. There's also noticeable indentations along the seal as you run your finger around it. This is getting quite a bit of attention lately with at least one club that I know of banning all aftermarket filters. The reports I've heard about the article below are that the oil filter was to blame.

Hmmm, couple of thoughts.

1) The seal issue is troubling.
2) It appears they've been making them in China for a couple of years now.
3) Just because it is made in China doesn't automatically = bad. How many of the other filter brands are made in China? My guess would be quite a few. In fact I just did a little searching and saw mention of the new OEM filters also being made in China, but I haven't verified beyond a couple of forum mentions
4) Will be interesting to see how/if K&N responds and gets the issue fixed. Can't imagine it won't get fixed soon and how limited or widespread the issue is.
5) I personally will continue to run them, but keep a good eye on them.

Apparently more than one race organization has banned aftermarket oil filters now for safety reasons and the K&N is the main culprit as I personally know 3 riders who have had K&N oil filter failures not including the ones we have read about in the news lately from Pro Racing.

Additionally there is no guarantee that an aftermarket filter has the properly rated bypass spring for your engines requirements and if you look at various aftermarket brands of filters you can see where they cheap out with glued on end caps, shorter filter media, pleats and epdm versus silicone seals etc...

Maybe they switched plants in China?? the change in manufacturing location was something I heard around the water cooler. Agreed that Made in China isn't automatically bad, but there have been numerous cases of the assumptions of quality that exist in US and Euro manufacturing not translating. If the manufacturer doesn't have a well documented and verified QC process, things like this happen.

Between myself, dricked, at least one more AFMer, and Kyle Wyman that's 4 events too many for me. Oil leaks are too f-ing scary for me.

Ya good luck keeping an eye on it. When you dump the entire engine oil capacity into your belly pan in 3s that's when you'll find out you've got a "leak" lol.

Garage
I'll stick with OEM, the only reason I liked them in the past is the Safety Wire hole.
