I thought I'd post this here since if there's anyone who can understand, it's the Cali riders. Please read on and let me know what you think:
I recently took delivery of a 2006 ZX10r from a member here, Diesel10R. It is a beautiful bike with modifications. The biggest one that applies to what I'm about to ask the good folks on here is that it's a non-California bike from Massachusetts. Part of the registration process at the DMV is that the inspector will inspect not only the VIN but also look for the emissions label. I have researched this emissions label and have also spoken to a DMV representative today and the rep did say they will be looking for this label. It is interesting to point out that prior to me moving forward with the sale, I also called and talked to a DMV rep and specifically asked what will they be looking for and what will I need to successfully register an out of state bike and also issue a new title. Of everything I was told that I would be required to have, none of what I was told mentioned anything about this emissions sticker as part of the inspection.
I have looked at other discussion threads on this online and I have read horror stories ranging from DMV not issuing new tags and registration because the owner could not show or point to the inspector where this label is, to literally turning away the owner, to tagging the VIN in the DMV system as permanently cannot be registered in the state! Geez! Thinking about that last one is giving me nightmares already.
It is my understanding that this sticker/label for California motorcycles will show "Federal and California (CARB) emissions compliant" or something to that effect and that means it's good to go. If it only says "Federal emissions compliant" (or 49 state approved), DMV will not approve it.
I wanted to ask you guys
1. Are you familiar with this emissions label or sticker that specifically states something along the lines of "Federal and California compliant"?
2. If so, do you know where it is located? (I already did an online research for a 2006 zx10r and nothing came up, I even called a Kawasaki dealer and gave them the VIN and
their system did not pull up any info on whether it's only 49 state compliant or if it is California compliant.
3. For those of you with a California 2006 zx10r, can you please help me out and let me know if this sticker exists on your bikes?
4. If you find it, is it possible if I borrow it just so I can temporarily stick it to the bike and have it there when the inspector inspects the bike on the day of my appointment and
after they have successfully green lighted the inspection I can give it back to you?
The last one I've read from other motorcycle forums that those who had this same issue here in California were able to successfully register their bikes using this method because the inspectors don't really care what bike you put in front of them, what you've done to it, nor are even familiar with what factory exhaust system you're supposed to have on there, all they care about is seeing this emissions sticker for themselves!
The bike doesn't even have this kind of a sticker anywhere. I've looked at every little spot where it could possibly be, even the Kawasaki dealership tech I had on the phone the whole time was helping me find it and nothing.
Please let me know what you think or if you guys have any other ideas.
