There were loads of trick 400cc supersports bike made for the Japanese market from 89-98ish due to it being so much easier to get a license to ride a smaller bike over there. In Japan once their vehicles are a couple of years old they have to take a very expensive test to remain on the roads, so most owners chop them in for a new bike. Most of these bikes were bought up by British importers got stuffed into shipping containers and found their way to the UK.

Here in the UK we were lucky enough to enjoy the NC30 (Baby RC30) RVF400 (Baby RC45) CBR400RR (BabyBlade) FZR400, ZXR400 and GSXR400.

I had an NC30 V4 400 and it was an awesome bike. These bikes had high quality suspension and on sticky tyres, even being a ten year + old design can easily outperform any litre bike on a tight track or on a twisty British backroads. You can carry loads of corner speed with confidence and have loads of fun dusting big bikes on trackdays.

The NC30 and FZR400 were available from UK dealers for a brief period but cost much more than one shipped in from Japan and also far more than a sports 600. Only Kawasaki continued to offer a sports 400 for the UK market and dropped the price of the ZXR400 to a sensible level and only discontinued it this year. It remained unchanged in its L model form since 1991!!

We also had the Kawasaki KR1 and KR1S two stroke twin 250's which were fragile banzai things. Suzuki offered the RGV250 in direct competition.

Aprilia produced the RS250 using the Suzuki's RGV250 engine, this was discontinued in the UK last year due to it being unable to meet the latest emmissions restrictions.

The Japanese market changed in the late 90's so mini versions of the next generation of bikes were never produced. Shame really as a mini 10R or a mini R1 would make wicked track bikes.
