I'm planning on buying the 89 and the tranny isn't that quiet when shifting. Certainly, not like a Harley, when shifting, but certainly of notice.
Are they loud like that, or quiet?

89 zx10 transmission

I'm purchasing that bike, and the trans. makes noise when shifting, like a clunking noise. Do you think that's a pretty serious thing, and what can I do to have it looked at?

89 zx10 transmission

I'm new to this site, but, here goes. I'm buying this 89 zx10, period. I love that damn thing. It just feels great. It's just the noise when I shift it. I wish I could find someone who could give me an idea of whether it's going to break on me, or if it's going to keep on going. One person said that they do make noise and another said his is smooth as can be. How expensive could it be, is it the whole tranny that needs to be rebuilt, or just something that's a 20 dollar part and some labor. Well, if I get a reply here that would be great. The bike fits me perfectly and when I twist the throttle in 3rd gear it's pretty nice!

If there is a loud thunk shifting into first gear from neutral that's pretty normal with the ZX10/11s. If you're having issues with noise while shifting thru the gears riding then that's another issue which could be a problem. If that's the case it could be worn shift forks or problems with a gear(s), you won't know that until you get into the transmission. Parts wise it's hard to say with out knowing more take a look at http://www.ronayers.com or http://www.zxzone.com once you have an idea of what's causing the noise.

I have 40K miles on mine and it shifts smooth as butter however going into 1st gear from neutral I get the normal thunk. I will tell you this, the 10/11s do not to like to be wheelied for long periods of time, it causes oil starvation to the #3 bearing.

It's Not denial, I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

Just got back with my new toy. I bought an 89 ZX10 with a 2003 ZZR1200 motor in it. It has a set of 41mm flat-slides and a 4-1 micron pipe. Too cold to ride especially since we just got some snow today. Took it gently around the block. Response is spectacular! The rattle of the flat-slides is addicting. Can't wait for it to warm back up.
