weird in-between gear shift and bam

the other day when riding i was just cruising and i was going from second to third gear shift but i didnt go all the way up and it kinda momentarily went in-between gears with out hitting second or third and then a little rev and bam it slammed into third makin a awful sound. like a grind and pop in. i remember doing shit like this on my old cbr 600. what exactly is happening when that happens and how bad is it for the bike. is this something that can destroy a tranny or is it normal to do that once in the blue. i mean the bike feels the same but dam in my head its like damaging lol

It will damage the transmission if it keeps happening. Usually it is caused by one of 2 things - a worn shift fork a a rider who shifts lazy.

The shift forks push the constant mesh gear pairs together on a shaft. The gear pairs meet and connect using gear dogs and slots on the side of them, not the teeth of the gears. You know, since they're called constant mesh and all for a reason. If the gears don't come together properly to let the gear dogs fit in the slots, then they will give you a false neutral and will put undo pressure on the shift fork. And as each gear dog hits a slot as it goes by, it will wear out the ledge of both of them and make a grinding sound. And then all of a sudden, the dogs will fall into the slots and BAM!

This usually won't cause an immediate failure of the tranny unless it's at a high gear speed with lots of torque on it. But it will start the deterioration process and it's more likely to happen again and continue to wear out. Considering you experienced this on your last bike too, it sounds like you need to work on your shift technique a bit. And if this happens again, the first thing to do is pull in the clutch, let the motor RPM drop some, make a positive shift with your foot, and then let the clutch back out. And don't shift mid-corner either! That's bad technique and something like this can put you on your ass!

That was a one-time thing man. And I was drunk.

That made me laugh! It was the perfect comeback to these types of threads! I'm just sorry I didn't post that first.

What SkyDork said has happened to me a few times, but also consider, the last time this happened to me it was the result of 3 pins shearing out of my clutch and going through the side of the engine case. And i am not a lazy shifter, it happened while downshifting 4 -> 3 at 120mph for a turn on the racetrack.

I would take the time to pull the transmission casset and inspect it for damage, as well as inspect your clutch for damage or issues as when mine went in bad fashion it cost me the entire motor.

it was literally an almost at idle speed shift. there was no power or tq applied. i was in dense traffic moving slow. this is the first time this has happened to me since probably 2003. i had one lazy shift in 14 years! lol. i deff dont think i need to inspect anything. i was curious what was happening when it happened. it sounded almost like just throwing it into first how it snaps in all loud and shit. but just a little louder. skydock has me listening to eveything to everything constantly now. ever since my red oil light for 10-20 seconds aftre an oil change. im completely paranoid now, i almost cant enjoy riding im so focused on everything.

I would say that if you don't want to be paranoid, then don't post these types of threads.

Don't be overly critical of everything and just enjoy the bike! Things happen. And the more seat time you have on the bike, the more familiar you'll get with all the noises and if something is out of place with it. You'll also develop a better feel for the idiosyncrasies. And if you're that focused on everything else and not paying attention to riding the bike and what's happening around you, then that's a recipe for disaster. Pay attention to the moment when riding, enjoy it, and fret about the things that come up, not every squeak, bell, and whistle.
