It's been a long time deciding

...but I've finally put down a deposit to buy a Gen 4

Due to pick up in a couple of weeks.

I can actually choose any of the 10s they have in stock though which is nice if I don't like it in person.

Wanted to ask, are there any recalls on this model that I need to check that have been carried out? Anything else in general about this model I should check?

I already own a 98 ZX6R and a Z1000SX (Ninja 1000), so I'm familiar with Kawasaki bikes, but just wanted to find out anything specific that you don't hear about unless you speak to owners.

In advance of buying the bike I've already ordered the essentials every sports Kawasaki should have:

1) APE manual cam chain tensioner to hold off the Kawasaki rattle
2) A full race fairing kit as the track is where the bike will spend most of its life

Note: Bike already has braided lines, crash mushrooms (what you US peeps call frame sliders), and because this is a Euro spec bike it already has the full fat power output

Getting excited and will post pics when I get it

No (sorry I should have said) it's a used bike. Just under 8500 miles so still fresh.

Comes with the extras I was going to have to buy anyway for track.

Oh another question, I will be Woolich flashing this to disable some of the emissions and noise controls on the bike, but I wanted to ask, is it possible to know if the bike has already been flashed without hooking the ECU up to a computer?

only recall i am aware of was for the 2011-2012 models which had the crankcase oil leak..

2012-08-01 (Published by NHTSA on 2012-08-01)

Recall Summary: Kawasaki is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 ZX-10R (ZX1000JBF/JBFL/KBF/KBFL/JCF/JCFL/KCF/KCFL) 'NINJA' motorcycles. Engine oil may leak from the crankcase at the starter mounting point and pool on top of the crankcase. Continued use in this condition can allow oil to spill over onto the rear tire.
Hazard: If oil spills onto the rear tire, there is an increased risk of a crash, leading to personal injury or death.

Remedy: Kawasaki will notify owners, and dealers will remove the starter and seal the crankcase, free of charge. The safety recall began on August 8, 2012. Owners may contact Kawasaki at 1-866-802-9381.

Additional Info: Customers may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration's Vehicle Safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

NHTSA Source: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls...l_ID=12V369000

you may be able to check the ecu itself a lot of send in services will put a sticker on the ecu when they flash it. If woolich you will most likely have a on the bike harness to hook it up to the computer but he may of not put the harness on the bike they also have a bench harness that requires taking out the ecu to flash it.

not sure of any other way of checking easily.. to hook it to the computer you will need some type of harness that will connect to the ecu.. may ask the dealer that is selling it to you I am sure they would know or can check.. other than that maybe someone else can chime in.

Picked up on Wednesday but only got to use it today as battery was flat (battery is tiny on these).

Felt faster than the one I rode in 2011 but that was stock and I think some work has been done on this...Has a servo buddy for the exhaust and also it may have already been flashed but not sure.

Brakes are very spongy so I'm going to flush new fluid tonight.

Spent about an hour and a half trying to set the sag correctly last night but I think springs have been changed and are too soft on the front as could not get them to compress less than 25mm difference loaded vs. unloaded.

Other than that...Very nice bike...Like I said, power felt better than how I remember and I only had it in mode 2 this morning.

Looking forward to a trip to Germany later in the year where I can top it out on the Autobahn to see how fast it can go, but should be doing some track days before that.

It's almost too nice to turn into a race bike, but I feel it's a waste on the road so I will keep my GSXR 1000 K5 for that.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Some pics (sorry for the massive-ness)....

In case anyone cares...My K5 (how it used to look before too much crash abuse :( )

I'd say the easiest way to determine if it's been flashed is to see if the traction control adjustment has been altered. Anybody flashing the ECU would disable the TC restriction and allow you to switch TC to OFF while moving. If it's the OEM tune, then you will only be able to turn TC to OFF if the bike is stationary.

2013 ABS, Bridgestone S20/T30 Evo, Woolich, Danmoto shorty & link, Rifleman's 1/5th turn, K&N, Showa BFRC Lite w/ ukzx10r's plates & 5th Gen dogbone, GP shift, JT (-1/+0), EK, Shorai, EBC HH, AllBallz roller steering, set up by RMR Suspensions, heated grips, shorty levers, MotoDynamic signals & relay, plasti-dipped and vinyl wrapped (all green to black), Bestem carbon, PUIG Pro sliders, solo cowl, modified OEM sprocket cover, TST fender elim. w/LEDs. 40,000km+ and going strong!
