I really like they've fixed the awful (to me) windscreen. The suspension is stunning. The exhaust is an improvement as is the tail piece.

I wish they'd changed the dash to the one from the H2 though and got rid of the GSXR-alike wheels. Apart from that I would have liked a little more difference in appearance over the gen4 but it does look good and in the 'flesh' the differences may be more apparent?

That's not a Gen 5, more like a Gen 4.5.

The high-end calipers are new to the Kawi, and the all-new Showa gas charged forks are not on any bike at this point. With the addition of the quickshifter standard and the R1 price tag in the $16's, I think you'll see a much larger increase than you think.

We need a separate contest thread to get everyone's guesses in!!!

Its $16,299 so I was only off by $300 bucks.

Just because the calipers are new to Kawi doesn't really mean much. Other manufactories have been using them for a long time now. So brembo has been able to get the price down. All the other new stuff with the exception of the gas charged fork is not new the industry. Everything there has been on other bikes before so the cost isn't that high. ABS costs them almost nothing now.

I get that, but you're missing the NRE (non-recurring engineering) costs associated with development. And Kawi might not be getting the same mass quantity deal that Suzuki or Ducati does with the same parts. Kawi may have different specs on the Brembo calipers than the others too. Just like the "Ohlins" damper. The factory Ohlins is not the same thing they just pull off the shelf. Same with the other parts - including the Bridgestone tires. It's hard to make the leap that parts cost are the only thing driving the total MSRP and it is only a collection of parts pricing.

Considering the new R1 is $16,490, I expected this to be in the same ballpark. Happily, it's not.

?-Just my theory!?
I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Wet weight of the ABS bike was 439 lbs from my recollection. After I took the cat off my 2012, I put it on scale that read to the closest 20 pounds. It said my bike weighed 420 pounds (would have read 420 all the way up to 429 pounds before it read 440) which would be about right as the cat weighs about 10 pounds or so. I had most of a tank of gas as well. Not sure how well the scale was calibrated, just figured I'd share. My buddy with an s1krr with cat removed also put his on the scale before and after removal and it weighed 440 both times.

Nice little update.

Fooking decals gotta go though.

:::EDIT:::

Nevermind, came to their senses and released a black version. MMMMMmmmm

Thanks Kawi for making it look almost identical; my wife is for sure going to chop off my cock and balls when I pull up with this on the trailer now because it looks nearly identical to my 2011.

$300 cheaper at $15,999 and it's in black. Yup. Sold.
