Newbie here just purchased an 05' zx10r for 3k that's in decent shape.. only issue is when trying to tach it out it falls on its face around 8k!! And I'm not sure why or what I need to do to fix it .. I bought it from someone who acquired it not running and he said all he had to do was change plugs twice to get it running.. it ran after first plug change but wasn't long before it started acting up so he changed them again and since it's ran fine.( with flat spot or whatever) when I heard him take off on it he was able to tach it out past the 8k stall but I'm not sure how, I know it'll rev up with clutch in so maybe he just tached it out them dumped clutch once he was going but if you just hammer on it it'll actually stall out bad enough it won't go on past 8 or 9k and it's ugly , bucking and surging like crazy.. my f1 light is on but it's because the exhaust actuator sensor was removed prior and wires are just hanging there.. error code 34 .. was coming up with 32 & 34 but adjusted sub throttle sensor (I believe) back to markings that were scribed on it..( was adjusted all the way counter clockwise) again this was from previous owner.. but it did make the error 32 go away but still ran the same.. it came with a power Commander 111 programmer but wasn't hooked up.. guy who I got it from unhooked it when trying to get it running initially.. and it's got an aftermarket exhaust on it but I believe it's stock besides that... (31k miles on bike). Has anyone ran into this before?? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks for reading all this I know it's lengthy but figured more info the better understanding of what I'm talking about.. thanks to all..

Usually not revving passed 7-8k is a fuel problem. Often a pinched line under the tank or a fuel pump issue. The other stuff I'm not sure about. But it's extremely common tochesr those symptoms after the tank has been up or off. Double check that as well.
I had the same problem brings back a tear to me eyes.
So here?s you?re problem Coil Stack and this is how you find out which one.
Switch you?re bike on from cold. Wait like 10-15 seconds.
Put some spit on you?re index finger and touch each eachuast.
Wait for the tsssss noice and f*uck burned my finger with abit of steam and the one that doesn?t that?s where you?re problem lays.
Take out the spark plug give it a good old clean. Get a spark plug tester from eBay cost a few quid but at least you know if you?re getting some spark to it via the coil pack.
By the way on the right hand side near the air box there one big grey block abit of a pain to get to you?ll need to take off the fuel tank to get to it disconnect get a hoover on it to suck out any water and spray some contact spray and re connect that will fix you?re problem.
?light is on but it's because the exhaust actuator sensor was removed prior and wires are just hanging there.. ? are we talking about the servo? Because you might need a servo eliminator.
Uhhh there are better ways to find a cold cylinder than touching a exhaust pipe. One involves....wait...for ..it..... a ....spray bottle! Or just get ya a digi temp reader thing.
But yea im with blink and then whoever else mentioned bad coils. Sparks are cheap enough that i would never clean one, just throw it away and buy a new one. Its either your fuel pump taking a shit, bad coil(s) or possibly clogged injector(s) or pinched fuel line. If No to all of these then yes start chasing electrical gremlins and cleaning contact connections.
Thanks for all the responses, been too busy to do anything yet.. except start it but haven't even took down the road all week.? But power Commander is all the way unhooked, on work bench, and I'll test cylinders to see if I got one missing, with temp gun.. But wait, tried starting bike and it wouldn't start, after trying for a minute I noticed that I didn't hear my fuel pump humm or the lil beep and noise it usually makes when turned on... After a couple more times turning off and back on it made the usual sound and could hear pump hum and fired right up... Didn't know why it happened but since then I've started it every nite and it's done it to me two more times... I've wiggled all plugs and connectors that I could see, ... Don't know if it could be related to the "not revving past 8k thing..".
Oh and haven't got a clue if heads been checked or adjusted for clearance.. doesn't sound bad but will try to get that done soon.... Thanks for the advice...
Ok I found a lil time to troubleshoot and doesn't seem to be missing on any cylinder , temps outta head was relatively close together... So next test was fuel pump, and not sure how to test pressure on it but tested flow rate and according to owners manual it's NB ñ a bit short.. manual says 2.4oz (per 4 sec. Turn of key) and I'm under 2 oz and pressure although not measured seems weak, manual says 44 psi I believe, and mine was basically dribbling into measuring cup.. thinking about replacing pump but would like some suggestions or if this was normal... Thanks again
I had the same issue. I can't find the thread but there was one saying to open up the kickstand switch because sometimes moisture gets in there and somehow causes it to freak out at 8k. The bike thinks the stand is down so it cuts the power. Open up the kickstand switch, clean it up, and see if that works for you. It was the weirdest thing I heard, but it was easy to give it a shot and it worked for me.
Ok update!! Thanks to all first off and I replaced the fuel pump and test drove it yesterday, it seems to be fixed!! Tached on out when I hammered down on it and screamed. . Probably need to have injectors cleaned just by shape of fuel pump pickup sock but all is good , thank everyone for helping me solve this!!!
Ive used WitchHunter and ProFlow Technologies for cleaning injectors. Both were great, quick turnaround but ProFlow's overall service was better - even nicely #'ed my injectors by engraving for me since i put them in #'ed bags to begin with. Either way its 100 bucks.
Dude i got a 04 last week for 2700 and im having the exact same issue i cleaned filter k&n did exhaust servo mod ,plugs. I have no fi light. Im about to try a fuel pump
Update 2.0 ok well i first replaced fuel pump with cheap aftermarket one and the performance went downhill quickly, only lasted a week or two !! Bike still ran but suffered top end big time.. fuel output when checking pump was under 2 FL.oz. so I bought a used stock pump and it now flows around 4 FL. Oz. And bike runs a lot better... Just fyi... Thanks to all who read this and helped...
