mike, did you watch the video f sane posted on post #27 ? can you look at your x14's and verify that that plug can be removed opening up that ear pocket? you have to remove the cheek pad, then you should be able to see the pocket cover, and pull it out to reveal the speaker pocket.

thank you in advance,
enquiring minds. ski

May we all, get to have a chance to ride the fast one, walk away wiser when we crash one, keep hopin that the best one is the last one.

I thought those were just cutouts to change the size of the padding. Essentially it could be used for a speaker, but it is removable so you can buy different size pads to secure the helment more. Do you need super tight ear cushioning? Yes and no but I believe that area is meant for just the ear support/pad.

Just my

P.S. Great looking lid!

To put this thing to bed I got this response from my Shoei rep: The X-FOURTEEN comes with removable ear pads, a breath guard and a chin curtain. The ear pads provide comfort and also help deaden unwanted static noise. The holes behind the ear pads can be used as speaker pockets.

this particular model has vents in the ear pocket for cheek pad ventilation. you can see the pocket, and holes like a colander for this venting in the shoei cutaway picture.

duhastme, shoei has adjustable cheek pads but, you have to replace the whole cheek pad to get the adjustment (thicker or thinner). if shoei made thicker/thinner ear pockets and sold them separately, or they came with the helmet, I could see your theory on the pads at the ear area but, in this case, it appears the cut out is for ventilation and speakers.

thanks to all that helped, now I have to come up with the budget to buy it. LOL! Ski

Mike has clarified they can be used for both, but I was getting new pads for the x-14 from mike and I am pretty sure you can get thicker ear pads. From what I remember they want you to be able to get the helmet a perfect fit. So they made a "membrane" that all the pads attached to and can be removed and replaced for thicker/thinner pads. Same goes for the ear pocket pads I believe. Dont mean to de-rail the thread mike just doing a little thought trading
