nickalltogether 10-04-2010, 05:58 PM Have any of you guys done a trackday with sportbiketracktime? I am looking to do the first trackday of my life (pretty excited). Not sure which date I'm going to but it will either be Barber, Talladega, or CMP (most likely). I will be in the novice class, so I'm guessing everything will be pretty regulated and easy-going as far as pace. I guess my real question is: How is this group for trackdays? And is this the best avenue for me to pursue to get into track riding? I don't see myself ever getting into actual racing just due to the cost, at most I could see myself doing somewhere between 3 and 6 trackdays a year in the future.
cyclepuck 10-04-2010, 08:38 PM STT is a really good group for track days. They helped me a lot when I got started as in what lines to take along with body positioning. Start in novice and because it is more laid back and regulated and they will tell you when your ready for intermediate.
nickalltogether 10-04-2010, 08:45 PM Great! Thanks for the favorable review man. How "fast" is the novice group? I don't want to jump in over my head, but I'm pretty competitive and if the pace is really slow I may not like it I fear.
hayden41 10-04-2010, 09:10 PM They are a very professional organization. Top notch.
Dude, novice is severely laid back from what i've seen. My guess if you are a pretty aggressive street rider and have a clue what you're doing, you'll prob advance to the intermediate group by the end of the day. The "I" group has a pretty good array of riders from my experience. Those just moving up from novice and those who really could ride in advanced.
If you should decide to do a barber or talley, let me know. I have not done a track day since july '09 and am very interested in doing one this year. My normal trackday buddies are out so that has kinda put a damper on my riding along with schedule conflicts and such. One has moved and the other just had a baby and just can't pull one of this year. I live just a few minutes from barber and everytime they have a trackday or event i can hear it and makes me miss it even more.
It really can't hurt to go into novice if 1) you've never been to a track 2) you've never been to that particular track.
You don't want to be learning the track while getting past like crazy. It's just not fun for you or others.
If you really are fast (not just think you're fast), they do allow you to bump up to Int.
The first several sessions of a novice trackday with STT is follow the leader. But you use this time to learn the lines so you are ready for the rest of the day.
I say do yourself a favor and do at least one day of novice.
I think you'll enjoy the day and subsequent ones so much better.
slinkt 10-04-2010, 09:29 PM STT is a great org, ridden with them many times. very laid back and well-run.
just a suggestion: dont worry about moving up groups on a first track day. just relax, enjoy your track time and work on lines and corner entry. if the ctrl riders move you then so be it, but dont set that as your goal. goal should be to get comfortable and become smooth. if you are progressing well in beginner group it's a great time to work on figuring out how to pass slower riders safely. if you want clear track, just pit and re-enter.
whenever you think you're going to open it up and pass ppl on the straights remember.. there's a corner at the end of that straightaway. i see that happen a fair bit, folks trying to pass everyone on a straight only to run out of track, panic and crash. it's not a race.
green10 10-04-2010, 09:32 PM Ive used them and they are good. They run a good show!!!you'll have some good fun.Enjoy!
TENN10 10-04-2010, 10:01 PM STT is a great group.
You won't be able to find a Barber spot.:headshake Way too late for that.
I did Tally in Nov. last year. It's a fun little track.

Damn, oh well. I guess I'll do shitty ol' CMP haha. They still had Barber listed on their site so I was somewhat entertaining the idea.
Does anyone think November 20th will be too late? I'd also hate to get out there and the track temps be too cold for any kind of confidence.

Its listed, but notice when you click on Barber it says GROUP FULL on all 3 groups for both days. Barber sells out fairly quick. Its a sweet track.
Nov. 20th is a guess. That time of year mornings are cool - cold, but somedays warm up nicely. Shouldn't be too bad, but who knows.
I'm entertaining the Dec. dates for Jennings myself. Hope to have a different track bike by then.
kermitdfrogzx10 10-09-2010, 01:05 PM I'm doing my first track day in Nov at Little Tally. Goin down Saturday night and doin the Sunday ride. I'm super excited and can't wait. Maybe I'll see you there. BTW, that's a real familiar road in your pic, I think I've been there a time or two.

meanstreak5 10-15-2010, 08:44 PM STT great organization, they will take care of you, like everyone has said start off novice if you are fast and do well you can open it up after lunch and they wont bother you unless your riding like an a$$.
mgulock 10-15-2010, 11:42 PM You will fit right in. I did my first day a last year with STT and everyone who rides with them is very good and helpful.
I will be at Barber the 24th.

nickalltogether 10-18-2010, 05:58 PM I just booked my day! November 20th at CMP. I decided not to officially book the 21st (Sunday) they said if there were spots open for Sunday and I wanted to add another day I could just pay for it there.
GosuPaintballer 10-19-2010, 01:04 PM Yeh STT is a good organization, and like stated before, don't worry about your riding ability, speed, etc. Start off in Novice and when the instructors feel like you're ready they will bump you to Int. Also, if ya want, i'm headed down to Road Atlanta at the end of October with www.nesba.com with some of my friends and dad (yes my dad does trackdays) if ya wanna join us? Just a little advice, if ya do a trackday with STT and for some reason the novice class was too slow for you and you then decide to do a trackday with nesba, still sign up as a novice for nesba. Nesba novice is a much faster pace then STT novice. And STT Int. vs Nesba Int. groups is the same way with Nesba being a much faster pace. All this info comes from my personal experience over the years of doing trackdays for anyone questioning my judgement. Main thing though is be safe, listen to the control riders, and have fun! Also, fair warning... once you do a trackday you won't wanna even ride street anymore, and it's VERY VERY addictive lol!

Thanks for the advice and the PM. I know I will get addicted to them, I'm afraid of losing my desire to ride streets though :(
GosuPaintballer 10-19-2010, 04:29 PM NP, and some people do and some people don't loose the desire to ride street after doing trackdays. Me personaly i lost all desire and have no interest riding street anymore, but to each it's own. I do however think that anyone and everyone that owns a sportbike needs to do at least one trackday at some point in there life, cause if they don't they will have missed out on a whole new very exciting experience that you can't get from just riding on the street!
anaxdlere 11-09-2010, 06:53 PM I am coming out to the East cost next week and I signed up for the saturday date with STT too. They run a very user friendly org and did a great job the last few times I have attended their events. Hope to see you out there. I am on the green 07.

Awesome, I'll be there on the 07 zx6, black... Most likely to be seen cartwheeling through the grass.
anaxdlere 11-23-2010, 08:59 PM Good to meet you at the track, Nick. How did you do? It was the perfect temperature for a trackday!

I did pretty well. Kinda slow lap times (the best were just under 2 minutes, 1:58 or so) but had a lot of fun for my first time out on the track and I want to get back as soon as possible. How was it for you?
anaxdlere 11-23-2010, 09:52 PM I had a blast. I really liked the track. For anyone who may need work on their right handers (which I did), that was certainly the location for it. 12 out of the 14 being rights! I got some video from the morning sessions which I will try to edit down and post.
I definitely want to try this track again, just wish it was not such a long haul from St. Louis.
Anyone else from this forum get out there? There were a $hitload of Kawis

Day 2 was great also. Same perfect weather. Maybe a bit less bikes off track then Saturday. We packed up a session early to get a head start on the trip home. We were beat at that point anyway.
We usually go to Road Atlanta, Barber and CMP. Think you will make it out to a any of those next year?
anaxdlere 11-23-2010, 11:10 PM I definitely plan on hitting Road Atlanta and Barber next year. I have never been to either of those tracks either. Some of my friends went to both this year and I missed out, so I am determined to try my hand at them.
I will definitely give you a shout when I go and see if you guys will be there.
wicked 11-24-2010, 09:22 AM ive ridden with them...really well organized and well put together track days...i highly recommend
