: How many times have you run out of gas?
Captain Jack 03-05-2005, 02:45 AM I mean, what's with the friggin' low fuel light that comes on with 1/3 of the fuel left?
I've run out twice:
First time, 2 blocks from the gas station, 240km on the odo (150 miles)
Second time, 1/2 mile or so from the gas station, 220km on the odo (138 miles).
The first time, was at a 4-way stop, so I pushed the bike to my place (closer than the gas station).
The second time I was travelling at relativistic speeds, so I managed to coast (with the clutch in) to the next freeway exit, up the off-ramp, and another 4 blocks to the gas station. It was pretty sweet, actually. Coasted right up to the pump. Traffic behind me was less impressed. :headshake
gladding24 03-05-2005, 03:17 AM I voted Never, but I don't fill up when the light comes on. I know if I hit 120 when the light comes on, I can take it easy and get another 30 mi. out of the tank no prob. farthest I've been after the light was about 40mi and she still had a few miles left in her.
lol I start looking for a gas station as soon as the light comes on. Usually around 110 miles. I might go about ten miles after it comes on but not much more.
I'm not too fond of the idea of pushing my bike or leaving it on the side of the road to go get gas.
SuicideMachine 03-05-2005, 10:13 AM 1st tank of the year almost took me by surprise - still had stabilizer in it which means less actual gas. I think the light came on after 75 miles or so. Now its back to the more predictable range.
snoopnoon 03-05-2005, 12:00 PM I ran out of gas on the highway. luckily my friend has a 12 bar so i just grabbed onto that with my hand and took off with him towing me. Did this for about 2.5 miles til lthe exit and then gas station.
stunnerific_harry 03-05-2005, 12:10 PM im glad i havent ran outta gas yet, but i probably just jinxed myself
litrejunkie 03-05-2005, 12:14 PM We usually ride hard thru some desolate mountains, So I fill up when I see a decent gas station..Even if it's 3/4 full.
R1GSXRKILLER 03-05-2005, 12:25 PM So your low fuel light comes on....that means find some gas quick or you'll be walking & you ran out of gas not once.......but twice  ......so when your oil light comes on you gonna wait till you blow your engine before you put some oil in there
Naw man don't do any of those redicules mods you were talking about...the'll just make your bike heavier for you to push the next time you run out of fuel:headshake .... .
BNninja 03-05-2005, 12:31 PM I ran out of gas once, but I was lost and in a residential area so there was no stations...luckily a guy pulled up who had some gas in the back of his truck and I was only stranded for 5 minutes....cool Harley owner that day
Frankyoz 03-05-2005, 07:22 PM I have run out of gas twice in the gas station parking lot, talk about good timing, and I have a skill of knowing exactly how much it will cost to fill up by the weight of the bike
GuitarPlyr 03-05-2005, 07:50 PM I ran out of gas on the highway. luckily my friend has a 12 bar so i just grabbed onto that with my hand and took off with him towing me. Did this for about 2.5 miles til lthe exit and then gas station.
:shady:
cain772 03-05-2005, 08:24 PM i never ran out of gas. the light comes on at about 110 so i know i have 30+ to go.
nolaZX10 03-05-2005, 08:26 PM Im not answering this... itll jinx me!!!
stunnerific_harry 03-05-2005, 09:07 PM i remember this one time a bunch of us were on the 805 north just a lil pass plaza. one of our fellow bikers ran outta gas and was on the fast shoulder. so a bunch of us pulled over and ran onto the freeway to slow the cars to a complete stop to let him get on the onramp of the plaza blvd. that was funny, imagine all the peoples faces when they saw us. i wish i woulda had a video camera for that one
^^^Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Harry's longest post.
Captain Jack 03-06-2005, 02:34 AM I ran out of gas on the highway. luckily my friend has a 12 bar so i just grabbed onto that with my hand and took off with him towing me. Did this for about 2.5 miles til lthe exit and then gas station.
Which hand did you use?
Captain Jack 03-06-2005, 02:42 AM So your low fuel light comes on....that means find some gas quick or you'll be walking & you ran out of gas not once.......but twice  ......so when your oil light comes on you gonna wait till you blow your engine before you put some oil in there
No, if the low oil light comes on I'll top up the crankcase and sell it to some squid who wants to slam it and chrome it.
As I was saying, my fuel light comes on when there's still 33% of the tank's range remaining. It's totally untrustworthy. If I were cruising the Interstates to Sturgis, perhaps this would be a reasonable time frame for it to come on, but I don't swing that way bubba.
JeredH 03-06-2005, 03:31 AM why do you ask and who wants to know :bump:
kwakman 03-06-2005, 04:18 AM I ran out once. The first time after I put the PC on. I ride to and from work, and the light came on just as I was getting to work, I had always made it home to the station at home and filled up before, but now it was a different story!
That was my one time...
slide 03-06-2005, 08:14 AM Oops, too late. I voted once but never have on the 10R. I did once on another bike and got so tired pushing it to the station, I won't do that again. No way would I leave the bike parked either while I hoofed it for gas.
Anyway, I get from 100 to 120 miles to light and then have ridden 20 more. Even so, I still have 3/4 gal left in the tank. So I figure a safe range for easy riding is about 150 miles total.
slide 03-06-2005, 08:16 AM I have run out of gas twice in the gas station parking lot, talk about good timing, and I have a skill of knowing exactly how much it will cost to fill up by the weight of the bike
How much to a 100% fill when you ran dry? I'm curious to know how much unusable we carry.
zrxhooligan 03-06-2005, 12:44 PM I ran out once just as I was coming in off the track. I was having some really good laps when the low fuel light came on and I figure I could get 2 or 3 more laps with out any worries. well I pulled in and promptly lost power!:eyecrazy: I guess I won't take that bet again!
Kyle
snoopnoon 03-06-2005, 07:12 PM Which hand did you use?
My right. It was the acceleration that was the killer to my arm and grip.
force = mass* acceleration.
litrejunkie 03-06-2005, 09:06 PM With today's gas prices, I can easily burn $25 on fuel for a whole day's worth of riding.
bikerscum 03-07-2005, 01:18 AM I have a skill of knowing exactly how much it will cost to fill up by the weight of the bike
Funny.. I know just how much *less* throttle to give once the front end is light. Those Emeril wheelies are tight.. You know, the kind that when your tank is 20lbs light it's like BAM! 12 o'clock baby! w00t! :rockwoot:
snoopnoon 03-07-2005, 07:27 AM Funny.. I know just how much *less* throttle to give once the front end is light. Those Emeril wheelies are tight.. You know, the kind that when your tank is 20lbs light it's like BAM! 12 o'clock baby! w00t! :rockwoot:
Yah the on/off throttle transition up in the higher RPM's with an empty tank is definatly ... umm.. fun :occasion1
Frankyoz 03-07-2005, 10:48 AM Cali prices around 2.15 average for premim usualy takes right around 9 bucks when she is empty, and she never takes a full 4.5 gallons. always around 4.25 at most, but maybe that is because the bike is on the kick stand dunno, just something that I thought about for awhile.
Frankyoz 03-07-2005, 10:50 AM Yes those light tank wheelies are fun at times, its not fun when your coming out of a turn still leaned over and you get on it to get that bite out of the rear tire and the bike tries to stand up and straighten out, lol had that happen once or twice. Oh and before anyones tells me, I know I dont need to get that bite out of my tires and it causes them to wear faster, but it feels so good hehe
stunnerific_harry 03-07-2005, 11:23 AM dude i wish i could pay 2.15 for prem here
stunnerific_harry 03-07-2005, 11:24 AM 2.15 is usually the going rate for regular
Frankyoz 03-07-2005, 11:32 AM I get the discount buying gass on base hehe, right now it isnt 2.15 but for the past few months it was right around that. I think now it is at 2.37
MAVRIK 03-07-2005, 01:13 PM It Sucks...and For No Apparent Reason Is Goes Up 24 Cents A Gallon (was Just On The New, But No Reason Why)....they Are Fucking Us
stunnerific_harry 03-07-2005, 01:21 PM yes they are cuz spring and summer are around the corner
Frankyoz 03-07-2005, 01:27 PM Its all a conspiracy they are trying to get as much money from us as possible. According to the new news week the one with marthat stewart on the cover, by 2008 the goverment is going to make it mandatory for all vehicles sold in the states to have double the mpg than they do know. According to the same article with "flexible" fuel cells most vehilces would be able to get up to 500miles per gallon burning Methanol, Ethanol, and petroleum.
Its crazy but for now, they need to get that crap back down so people are going broke paying for gas.
stunnerific_harry 03-07-2005, 01:27 PM dude those feul efficent cars cost a grip man.
sweeper 03-07-2005, 01:59 PM I just hope all the gas guzzling SUVs on the road leave some for me to have fun with.
pongo 03-08-2005, 02:57 AM its all bs Frank....Cali is now bitching they have lost tax revenue from all the fuel efficient cars not needing as much gas....so they have a motion in the legislature to pass a milage fee.....all Cali vehicles would have a device installed to record all the milage driven for the year and then you would get a bill for it......i can't even believe they are thinking about this!!!!
slide 03-08-2005, 07:47 AM I've read proposals which would punish high consumption and reward low. The bicycle crowd would really make out great and it'd for SURE increase the number of miles done by bikes of all kinds as well as pretty well kill road going catshit like Hummers.
No way will we ever see it because of that. Too bad. Think of how neat the world would be if we were mostly on bikes - with or w/o engines.
Frankyoz 03-08-2005, 11:24 AM You never know, change is in the air. With the way oil prices have been the past two years it has opened up allot of peoples eyes to how we need to find a alternate form of fuel. Dont read me wrong gas engines will be here for a long time to come but I would be suprised to see some innovative things in the next couple years that will start opening new alternatives.
ausbikenut 03-08-2005, 04:48 PM 20.27 litres in a 19 litre tank does this count? Depending on what map I am running it ranges from 170 kms to empty from full to 380kms to empty haven't actually been caught out yet but Oh so close!
jeech 03-08-2005, 04:50 PM where is that conversion site when you need it.. counting on fingers.... but just at a quick glance.. depending on how you're running more than doubles your fuel consumption??????? :eyecrazy: :eyecrazy: :eyecrazy:
sounds like some of those maps are very rich !!
ausbikenut 03-08-2005, 05:02 PM You have no idea, turns it from a baby to a beast in the press of a button! You would be surprised just how much is left untapped in the 10R, it also makes it easy when you have unlimited access to a brand new Dynojet 250i with all the trimmings and special Race software just one of the perks of being the race team manager that runs 3 Superbikes.

okay, it's official.. i want your job
ausbikenut 03-08-2005, 05:21 PM In the words of Bart Simpson eat my shorts! They also look after my other bikes as well just one of the fringe benefits, the 10R is a work in progress we haven't even opened the engine yet just correct setup suspension exhaust mapping ect makes it a very different bike like I said you would be surprised just how much is left in a stock 10R. Currently in it's state of tune around the 170 rwhp mark I would like to see just how close to 200 I can get in street trim........ a work in progress.
Captain Jack 03-09-2005, 03:27 AM 380km? You guys must have bigger gas tanks. 380 km would be 52 mpg! If your tank is 19L, that's still 47mpg. I gotta call BS on that one.
I have seen 220 km and 240 km on a tank (17L), giving 30.44 and 33.2 mpg.
The first time I ran out of gas (at 240), I was surprised because I expected to get at least 260. The next time (at 220) I was even more surprised because I expected to get at least 240.
ausbikenut 03-09-2005, 03:05 PM Captain,
your details say it all "Stock 10R" if you have read my previous posts you will see what I am talking about. Obviously never played with mapping equipment? You would be truly surprised how much it changes the bike, on the track I can basically empty the tank in 120 kms with the in your face map loaded. This usually means big blue flames ( VP9 fuel ) out the exhaust very rich fueling but JEEEEZ does it go........... same bike different map (currently the one loaded) feels like someone stuffed a spud up the exhaust with economy to suit. If you have the equipment this is just how big a change you can make to these bikes and how they run, eg: in Europe certain countries have a 100hp limit on output how do they do this? It's all in the mapping and ignition timing lift limits on the carbs/injection ect. Like I said my bike is not stock just haven't opened the engine yet, so call it BS if you like intitled to your opinion just giving you the facts.
R1GSXRKILLER 03-09-2005, 03:33 PM "hey jack"
Your also starting to sound like a idiot. When you bought your so called 10.....what.....did you think you were getting a cruiser.pssshhhhhhh....if your going to bitch about how much gas your bike is wasting than maybe you should switch to a fuggin moped, that way when you run out of petro you can carry the son-of-ah-bitch instead of pushing.
And what kind of dumb ass runs out of gas in the city....after he knows he's bikes a gas guzzler.....paaaalease fuck off now.
Frankyoz 03-09-2005, 04:54 PM Damn son bringing the heat with both barrels

Someone who doesn't particularly fear running out of gas in the city, your majesty. Go troll another thread.
AUSBIKENUT, you're seriously saying with a mapping change you think you can get 52 mpg on the 10? I do not believe that.
stunnerific_harry 03-09-2005, 11:28 PM im startin to feel tension in herre

ausbikenut 03-10-2005, 02:16 PM Captain, it seems you are the only one who finds this beyond belief and like I said your progative just giving you the facts as I have found them. What have I to gain by joining the game and spreading BS? You need to take into account that this also requires tempering of the right hand ( on the throttle ) to acheive the results.
You only need to look at Moto GP to see the effect that alternate maps can make on a bikes performance and fuel useage. Like I said my bikes not stock just haven't opened the engine yet!

I'm pretty sure you'd have to completely cut fuel to some of the cylinders to get 52 mpg. If your tanks are acutally 19L rather than the 17 we get here, then it's only 47mpg, which I can believe.
There's only so far you can lean out the engine before it stops working.
That allz I be sayin', y0.
