: Best tape for taping up headlights-no residue when comes off
steves87 09-12-2004, 07:41 AM Sorry for all new basic questions, but my first time doing this. Anyway, need to tape up the headlights, etc about a week before the actual track day. Wanted to know what everyone uses. I dont want a bunch of tape/sticky residue left over afterwards that requires a lot of clean up time. Thanks.
R1GSXRKILLER 09-12-2004, 10:39 AM Painters tape..(not the one they use for house painting)..this is the stuff body & fender (custom shops) use.
BIKEMIKE 09-12-2004, 11:00 AM Try Scotch/3M Blue Painters Tape.

BackMarker 09-12-2004, 04:36 PM I have a black bike so I have been using 2" wide electrical tape. No sticky stuff here.
dnwhoop02 09-13-2004, 02:43 PM Use the aforementioned blue masking tape... the stuff I have is made by 3M I think... for my last trackday I applied the stuff liberally to the front to cut down on the amount of lovebug guts I would have to clean off, and after peeling off the tape it was clean as a whistle
That is the best tape to use. It's made to come off.
Big Daddy 09-13-2004, 06:41 PM thats nice to know

02Silver 09-14-2004, 06:55 PM The blue stuff is the best to use IMO. Also put it anywhere number go if I remember ahead of time.
grnblur 09-22-2004, 10:06 PM I've used black contact paper cut to fit the lights. easy on easy off
DustinR 09-26-2004, 08:17 PM Just got back from track day and had to spend 2 hours getting off the sticky shit that was left on my bike from black duct tape. Show us some pictures and places to get decent tape. Please.

Yeah, duct tape and electrical tape tend to get gooey. If you don't want to go to a automotive paint shop to pick up some vinyl painter's tape, you can usually get away with using masking tape. Either one is easy to work with and the glue stays with the tape.

DustinR 09-27-2004, 05:45 AM Thanks I need black and I went to Home depot and they don't have that tape in black. I will look at the tape manufactures web site and see if they make it.

zeta xray 09-28-2004, 02:19 PM I want the tape job to look good and the wrinkles you get with the Scotch brand blue tape, bugs me. Besides, you have limited color choice. I use duct tape. Because it will stretch and give a little, I can make it look really good (smooth, no wrinkles). If you have your headlights disabled so that you aren't heating the glue and turning it to goop, it will come off very clean and easy. If you leave your headlights on, you will regret using duct tape. Or if you leave the tape on for more than a day or two you will have a lot of work to do. Duct tape is available in multiple colors, as well. I had a friend who used to get vinyl sign material. He found a real good color match for his Honda RC51 and it looked great. He was very meticulous and had minimal wrinkles. If wrinkles in the tape don't bother you, then the blue tape is probably the best.
trackaddict 10-01-2004, 11:45 AM Yeah any vinyl or contact paper is awesome... I've used everything and vinyls seem to work the best...
lucifer 10-02-2004, 07:35 PM Who cares what the tape looks like? Just go ride the fucker.....vanity makes you slow at the track.
zeta xray 10-02-2004, 07:46 PM Thanks for the input lucifer.
Check out the first bike shown during the Seattle 100 segment on Two Wheel Tuesday...That was my black 10R with the blue painter's tape. Sure made it easy to pick out from the other black 10Rs there that day!
12RPilot 10-08-2004, 02:55 PM I use a vinyl tape by 3M that they call "Decorate & Repair Tape". It's an inch and a half wide and comes in several colors. The part number inside the roll is 23-8083. It comes off with no residue but I can't vouch for it if you leave the lights operable. I just wish it came in lime green.http://predator.bikepics.com/pics/kawasaki-zx12r-00-bikepics-201947.jpg
lucifer 10-08-2004, 09:03 PM Thanks for the input lucifer.

Well I honestly can't say to much about the tape job  but the rider's style looks awesome. I wish I could go that fast. I have to get my style points where I can.
lucifer 10-11-2004, 11:53 AM lol, right on man thanks. At least you're goin' for it at the track. Keep the shiney side up, and have fun!!!
atkinsr 10-26-2004, 08:04 PM I used the blue tape this weekend for the first time. It stuck well, didn't come off.
A word of warning/advice though... NOTHING sticks to the back of this tape for very long. Especially those vinyl mailbox numbers we use for track days. Even tried duct taping (and clear plastic tape, and regular masking tape, and electrical tape) around the edges of the numbers to the blue tape and they *still* came off (fwiw, it was foggy/misty that morning).
bikerscum 10-27-2004, 06:34 PM Who cares what the tape looks like? Just go ride the fucker.....vanity makes you slow at the track.http://zx-10r.net/forum/images/smilies/smilies/thumbsup.gif What he said. Doesn't look so bad at speed. http://picturemerollin.com/s100/
lucifer 10-28-2004, 09:00 AM Those pics are funny, I used to race at SIR, it brings back memories. I sure hate that track.
dnwhoop02 10-28-2004, 11:03 AM Is the track ever dry?
treyzx10r 10-28-2004, 08:29 PM watch out leaving lights operable with the tape on had my friends tl100s cook the plastic.it was small but it did distort the lense
Thanks for the warning. Fortunately I've always pulled my fuses.
WARBIRD 11-20-2004, 01:57 PM Alright lucifer.......I gotta call ya on this one.........

wstaab 11-21-2004, 01:23 PM Gaffers Tape. A matte finish coated cloth tape with good adhesion, high tensile strength, conformability, and moisture resistant. Leaves minimal or no residue. Tears easily in two directions. Very strong, yet can be pulled apart if stuck to itself. Available in most any color.
