: Bent my damn rim!!!!! F%@#!!!!!
ZiG 9th 09-09-2006, 01:39 AM Took my bike outta the garage today and as i was backing it out i noticed my front wheel is bent! I thought i was seeing things or at first? I kept lookin at it like damn is my wheel bent? I put it up on the stands and spun the front wheel and it started wobbling, sure enough it is bent! The left side has a slight bend in it, and it isn't round with the tire anymore. Damn rugged streets in NYC bent my shit up!!! I was up there for labor day cruising around. Funny thing is i remember hitting some extra hard bumps but i didn't think i bent my rim??? Thatz weird i didn't notice it until now. :dontknow: I was like fuuuck man!!! Itz gonna cost me alot of money to get it fixed! Money i don't have right now!! :headshake Dealer wants $500 brand new!! Krazy!!!:headshake I probably can get me a half descent used one off of ebay for $200? Then i'm gonna have to get it chromed! Thatz another $300? Plus i'm gonna have to wait!! Shit!!! I might have to pack my season in early? :badteeth:

ZX10 Guy 09-09-2006, 07:50 AM Look into getting the rim straightened if it's not too bad. There's a place in PA which escapes my mind right now that does wheel straightening and another in Glen Burnie, MD called the Ye Ol Wheel Shop. I also think the GMD Computrack place in Scranton might do wheel straightening but not sure.

theres probly some local places to you also...
madkaw 09-09-2006, 06:06 PM Please do not straighten a front wheel, these wheels are cast and once bent will never be the same.
Forged wheels are different (marc. and magtan)
ZiG 9th 09-09-2006, 09:40 PM I guess my best bet is to just play it safe and get a new wheel? Someone else was telling me that i might not even need a wheel at all? They said it might not affect how the bike rides, and it just may be cosmetic? :dontknow: Even if it is cosmetic the fact that i know itz bent and can see it is gonna bother me! :headshake
cardeea 09-09-2006, 10:04 PM Zig, how bad is the bent?
I would NOT buy a new or used one. Could be an once upon a bent rim? Or a defected recall 04 rim, but new? Who knows.
You can have it fixed without any problem, it still holds air compression. Right?
So it must not be that bad.
Man just talk to some rim shops. Some car rim shops can fix that!
ZX10Miami 09-09-2006, 11:40 PM That sucks.
Thought I bent mine last night for sure, I saw the damn cat but he changed direction last second like a squirrel.
He may have gotten lucky cause I only felt a bump through bars not rear tire.
No blood found, never looked back, was probably doing about 50 or more so no chance I was goiing to brake, skid on him and wipe- just grabbed throttle.

When i first seen it i thought it was bad. But then the more i looked at it? Itz not to bad after all. Will post a pic up and let u guys see it.
rojapar 09-10-2006, 07:32 AM well, last night, i pulled a stupid move and could have possibly bent my rim. i was trying to get the front sprocket off and didnt have anyone to help me. i came up with the bright idea of sticking a rake handle through the wheel and letting it rest on top of the swingarm to keep the wheel from turning while i broke the sprocket nut loose. i got a ratchet and put a 4 foot piece of pipe over the end as a cheater and gave it all i had. all of a suddon, the rake snapped in half with a bang. i had no idea the wheel would have had that much torque transfered to it.
i spun the wheel around and could not visually tell if i bent anything. im hoping it will be alright. i guess i will have to ride it and see if it wobbles or else take it to the tire shop and have them put it on the machine to see.
what do you guys think? think i could have damaged the wheel with my slick move?
Madkaw is right about cast rims, be very careful about straightening them, ideally a casting should be heated alot to bend it, buy a new one.
ZiG 9th 09-13-2006, 10:06 PM Check it out here iz a pic or 2!
ZiG 9th 09-13-2006, 10:08 PM What do u guys think? It doesn't look that bad does it? :dontknow: I might be able to get away with it?
If it was my bike, I would junk it, but it isnt my bike, if it will straighten without ruining the chrome then go fo it, but if it ends up looking like ass then youre back to square one.
The thing that would worry me is the integrity of the wheel, another thing is if you leave it like it is and you hit a pot hole you could be looking at a very quick deflation and a nice gravel louge.
Yeah I would get it sorted! I know it costs but IMO some things you just gotta do.
Big Daddy 09-14-2006, 04:35 AM first question is didn't you know you hit/ran over something to do that damage?? :dontknow: and yes either repair or replace it. get away with what!! good gawd zig get a grip the rim is not straight, hence it needs repair or replacement.
BD
Stalker 09-14-2006, 05:02 AM I would bin it and get a new one. It will always be on your mind when riding so is it really worth keeping it for a couple of dollars :dontknow:

Never heard that but when you think about it.... running electricity through the rim while chroming, heating up and cooling maybe.
Electrolysis plays hell on aluminum around the ocean. I'm sure it is a controlled electrolysis when chroming but still.
Interesting- so many people chrome rims though, I think lawyers here would be all over it and there would be ads on tv.
"Were you or a loved one injured or killed due to a chromed rim breaking? Call us at 1 800 We'll Sue."
P.S.- not one comment on the cat hairs stuck in the bead of my tire huh(earlier post.)
Got my attention when it happened. Not quite a dead deer in the road but...

No problem since and easy to balance.....just like before:wink:
pongo 09-14-2006, 06:25 PM yeah its great to be able to straighten a rim out but you have to wonder why a manufacture (Kawasaki) would do a massive recall of every front wheel on the 04 model after finding only a few wheels with small cracks under x-ray...i know they're exposure for liability is greater but they wouldn't make that decision unless they were worried that there would be failures which would result in law suits....i'm sure somewhere on the paperwork that is signed before having the rim straightened is a waiver that the company cannot be held at fault for a failure of the rim integrety...for me there are enough distractions when riding to also be thinking about a rim failure at high speed....it always amazes me the weird shite that goes through your head at triple digit speeds...

Nice!! Damn if that place wasn't so far!
I took my wheel to this custom bike shop in Philly called "Sport Cycle" i dunno if u guys ever heard of them? But their work has been featured in mags like Cycle Dreams and some other ones. But check this out tho! I called them on mon. they told me yea we have 1 chrome zx-10 front wheel in stock! I'm like yessss!!! I'm coming down to get it!! They wanted $375 plus how much it will cost to repair my wheel which they didn't know until i brought it in for them to look at it. I couldn't make it down there until thurs. So i call them and ask hey u didn't sell the wheel yet did u? Lady sayz no......then she's like what kind of bikle do u have again? I say '06 zx-10r. Now shez telling me she doesn't know if its the right wheel or not? Puts me on hold 2 ask some1? Comez back and tells me they can't tell what bikel the wheel belongs to b/c its chrome and the serial #'s are faded or some weird shit she said?
I'm like damn u just told me on mon. come and get it this is a zx-10 wheel and now ur not sure??? wtf?? :headshake She sayz yea it may be a zx6363 wheel b/c they look the same. So i have her email me a pic b/c the way she sounded like she was clueless? That shit could've been a old zx10 wheel from 1988 or somethin? So yea the wheel lookz like mine, but they can't gaurantee that it will be the same? So i'm like fuck it! Took the chance an drove 1hr 30mins to get there doing 80 + in the rain tryin to get there before they close at 5pm.
Get there check out the wheel it looked ok! But the chrome didn't look as good as mine. But y did they take the wheel out of this plastic bag and right on the inside of the wheel in big ass red magic marker letters it sayz '05 zx-636 wheel?? I'm like daaamn i drove all the way down here for this?? They could've told me that over the phone!! They're a custom bike shop they should know that a zx636 wheel will not work on a zx-10!! I was pissed man!! I wasted time and money to go down there for nothin!! Dude was like i could probably make it work? I said nah i'm kool! They started givin me all of these options. Yea we can send it out 2 get fixed.....No! We can get u a wheel off of ebay and then send it out 2 get chrome....No!! I said i'll get back 2 u. Probably my last time going there! :headshake
V-Force 09-15-2006, 06:33 AM That's sucks. Driving so far for nothing, I would be pissed off too!!!!!

I heard a noise like somethin snapped! I said aww shit!!! What did i do now? :badteeth: Man this zx-10 must be fragile tho? B/c everytime i rode my zx-9 in NYC i never bent or hurt anything! Zx9 must be more rugged i guess? :dontknow:

Yea u don't even know! I was!!! I wasted money on a tank of gas for a SUV and spent toll money for the tnpk!!
But anyway i did some askin around and i found this guy out in the country that supposedly straigten's motorcycle wheels? So i take it to him Fri. afternoon. I don't feel 100% confident about it, i but i guess itz worth a shot?
See my thing is i'm lookin at whatz the cheapest way and how soon can i be back on the road? I would luv to do a brand new wheel and to have it rechromed but i'm lookin at being down for 3 weeks. I figure if i'm gonna be down that long i might as well pack it in for the year? :dontknow: Living here in the northeast we only have like a month and a half left in the ridin season. I wanted to have my bike ready to ride this weekend! But this guy iz talkin about he won't be able to get to it until monday! I gotta pay $25 just for him to even look at it, before he can even give me a price on how much it will be to fix??? :headshake
Basically to make a long story short? I'm burnt the fuck out!!! :angryfire Didn't know a bent rim could cause such a headache!!!:BangHead:
ZiG 9th 09-17-2006, 06:28 AM Got my shit fixed!!! Got banged for $250!!! But hey what can i say i'll be out riding on sunday so i guess i can't complain too much? I guess i pretty much paid for the convenience of havin it done in 24hrs?
The wheel looks really good i can't even tell where it was bent. He had to show me where it was. It only left a couple marks on the chrome that u can't really notice unless ur up close on it. So i'm kool with that. He said it went back true as can be.
I have a question do u guys think u should get the wheel balanced again? I still have my wheel weight on there, but he said that i might wanna get it balanced again? Whatz the effects of riding with an unbalanced front wheel? :dontknow:
Big Daddy 09-17-2006, 02:21 PM common sense applies here, rebalance it.

ZiG 9th 09-17-2006, 11:08 PM Put the wheel back on and it rode fine without being balanced. So i doubt if it will get it balanced? :dontknow:

This time I hit a more severe pothole than before. The story goes like this. I was up in the NYC area again, 7/26/08 on my way over to this midnight bikini bike wash up in the Bronx. I get lost, so I pull over to call my peoples to get more acurate directions. This kool old head pulls up on a busa an say's hey man is everything alright? So kool I'm following him an on the way over there he took me on this street that was so fukd up with potholes! I'm tryin my best to dodge them like I'm riding over land mines. So for one sec....I took my eyes off the road just to look around at my surroundings, an at the last second I see this massive pothole with a plate, knife an fork salivating at mouth! I said OMG!!!!
