: Quirky coolant temp reading?

I have a 04' Zx-10r. About 4k in miles. Anyway, yesterday i was riding, it was hot out. I look down and the temp is flashing "HI" So i was like f**K. I had a girl on the back. Anyway, this was at speed. Then it would flash 222, then 241, 236, 218, etc. Seemed like HUGE inaccurate jumps. I mean how can a bike go from 241 to 222 in like 10 sec.? So then i parked the bike, had dinner for a bit. Came back out, started it up, let it idle up to the fan, it never got above 225. The entire ride home on the highway (at speed once again) it never got above 190. Anyone make anything of this? Maybe a loose sensor wire? Where can i locate the coolant sensor?

Normally an air pocket does this, the sensor will only read if fluid is around it , as soon as a bubble goes past it the readings will drop until it gets wet again.

Do it......doooo it......duwit...duwit ! I did. I flushed the system, put the engine ice in. then i changed the oil to synthetic, new filter, and soaked the clutch plates. It went to 212 at idle, fan kicked on, then it dropped down to 202, and the fan went off. LOL...never got about 204. Pretty cool. I was very impressed. I can't wait to see if it runs cooler in traffic. Soaking the clutch plates and switching to synthetic was awesome too by the way.
